About Friends of Lone Pine Airport

The Friends of Lone Pine Airport, a 501c3 non profit, was formed in 2022 by a group of aviators who saw a historic, charming little airport in desperate need of attention.  Created in a spirit of fun and adventure, FLPA has grown over the past two years into a more substantial organization, advocating for and working to improve the airport, building a relationship with the County of Inyo, researching the aviation heritage that makes this airport so unique, and connecting a growing community of aviators.

FLPA Board of Directors

Jeff Montgomery: Executive Director

Jeffrey "Monty" Montgomery is currently a Joby team member working as a test pilot.  Monty began his aviation journey in 1991 and was flight instructing prior to shifting to a 20 year career in Naval Aviation.  After retiring from the Navy, Jeff worked for 6 years in Developmental Test as a government pilot with VX-31.  He left that career to fly a PC12 for a life flight organization serving remote communities near his home, which is where he was flying directly before the move to Joby.

Pete Gavitte: Secretary

When Pete Gavitte was born and the doctor spanked him, he made airplane noises.  He grew up running around the yard with arms either spread out as wings or gripping a virtual control stick and pressing the firing trigger.  When asked to do a book report in 6th grade he chose War and Peace because he thought there was an aviation element to it.  He gained technical competence in the 7th grade and still has the card (laminated) certifying that he is qualified to operate 16mm projectors in his junior high school to prove it.   One time Chuck Yeager said Pete was the genius behind breaking the sound barrier.  When asked how that could be when Pete was born 40 years after that event, Chuck said that "Pete transcends the space-time continuum".   I could continue to bore you with small facts about Pete's life but I have to get back to my Walter Mitty movie, and all the foregoing isn't really true... except the 16mm projector card, that part is true.

no, seriously…. Pete Gavitte has been flying since he was 18 years old.  He flew privately for 10 years while working as an EMT and paramedic before a stint as a CFII doing helicopter flight instruction.  He started a career in law enforcement where he worked several different assignments including 17 years as a law enforcement helicopter pilot. He has a BS in Aviation Technical Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Masters Degree in Transportation and Engineering Management from Cal Maritime.  He met the Montgomery's and got involved in FLPA when he was assigned to Lone Pine with his day job and flew regularly into Lone Pine Airport in his C-210 and Grumman AA-1A.  He has one wife of 30 years and two grown children off on their own adventures.  He currently works part time in the Emergency Medical Service programs at a community college and is in his 25th year of a law enforcement career.

Anna Montgomery; Treasurer

Anna Schaad Montgomery is a violinist, composer and teacher married to an aviator, which is a really great combination. She has released four albums and some singles over the years, and you can check out her work on any streaming platform or at www.annaschaad.com. In addition to fiddling and flying, Anna is very involved in homeschool with son Julian, loves to garden, cook, and all things outdoors. Living in Lone Pine is a dream come true, and working to increase the vitality of the airport is a project close to her heart.

Karen Atkinson: Karen is an artist with an extensive exhibition record who also does public art, installation and curating. She and Joe Luttrell founded a nonprofit in Los Angeles, Side Street Projects in 1991, and it is still running. Karen taught at CalArts for 31 years before coming to Inyo County. She is the owner and founder of Getting Your Sh*t Together, which works to make life better for artists by providing software, publications and consulting to artists and nonprofit arts organizations. She is on the Board of Directors of Inyo Council for the arts. www.karenatkinsonstudio.org

Joe Luttrell: Joe is a licensed contractor who has worked in the building industry all his life. He has worked on multiple builds and is featured on an episode of This Old House. He has worked with multiple artists on creating and building public art projects, and has taught woodworking classes for UCLA extension. He is now retired, but uses his multiple skills to benefit others.

FLPA Advisory Board
